About Us

Julie DeAngelis, M.S., CCC-SLP, has been a Speech Pathologist for over 10 years since graduating from Northern Arizona University and the University of Texas-Dallas. She holds both a Bachelor and Master’s degree in Communicative Disorders and brings to the Center her expertise in pediatric speech and language therapy. Julie has been at the Language Center since September 2007 after working in the public school system in the U.S. as well as abroad for a non-profit agency in Australia. Her interest and passion for global work continues to take her around the world as she generously volunteers her professional time for projects such as Operation Smile. |

Summer Peterson earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Speech and Hearing Science from the University of Utah in 2001 and her Master of Science in Speech Pathology and Audiology from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2004. After earning her master’s degree, Summer came out west and landed in Santa Barbara. A stop that was only supposed to be for one year, she “fell in love with Santa Barbara and her fellow Santa Barbarians” and worked for the Santa Barbara County Education Office for 7 years. She provided speech and language services to preschool children in their homes as well as at many preschool sites throughout the Santa Barbara/Goleta/Carpinteria area. Summer started working at the Santa Barbara Scottish Rite Language Center in September 2011 and is excited to be a part of the Scottish Rite Team.

Grace Shin began working as a volunteer at the language center in the summer of 2011. After volunteering for a few months, she was hired on as our “go-to girl”. Her duties range from fielding phone calls & emails to writing grants for the language center. Grace is our center artist and is the creation behind our wonderful monthly bulletin boards. She is a part-time student at Santa Barbara City College, where she is studying linguistics. She will be transferring to UCSB next fall where she will finish up her bachelor’s degree in linguistics. After graduation, Grace plans on attending graduate school to get her master’s in Speech-Language Pathology. |

Andy Saar, Personal Representative of the Santa Barbara Scottish Rite since 2003 and Chief Executive Officer of the Language Center, joined the Masonry in 1989. Since 1992, his position has encompassed the Valley of Santa Barbara and Carpinteria to San Luis Obispo.He has served in almost every capacity of his Blue Lodge as well as Master of his Lodge. He represented the Grand Lodge of California as Inspector of the 314th Masonic District. As one of the select few who have been awarded the 33° Honorary Degree of Inspector General, Andy, a retired police officer, is dedicated to helping make a better life for children in the community. |

Maurice Sourmany, President of the Santa Barbara Masonic Center and Chairman of the Language Center, has been a Mason since 1968. With various offices, Maurice was elected Master of the Magnolia Lodge #242 in 1977 and has been a member of the Scottish Rite since 1969. He received his 32° and also joined the York Rite and the Al Malaikah Shrine in 1969. Appointed as Grand Lodge Committeeman for 9 years, Maurice became affiliated with Carpinteria Lodge #444 in 1980 and was elected its Master in 1982. Working his entire life at Victor The Florist starting when he was 14, became manager at 35 and eventually became owner when his father passed away. Retiring at 64, he sold the business to his daughter in 2006 who is now a third generation florist. Appointed as Assistant Personal Representative in November 2009, Maurice presently serves on several committees with Scottish Rite and is currently serving as Master of Carpinteria Lodge. |
